QUEENSRYCHE
In 1982, Geoff Tate (ex-Tyrant, Myth, Babylon), Chris DeGarmo (ex-Joker,
Tempest, Cross+Fire), Michael Wilton (ex-Joker, Cross+Fire), Eddie Jackson
(ex-Cross+Fire) and Scott Rockenfield (ex-Cross+Fire) formed a band called
The Mob, and put together a 4-song demo tape. The demo caught the attention
of two local music-store owners, and the band's name was changed to
Queensryche, after 'Queen of the Reich,' one of the songs on the tape. Fame
arrived quickly in the form of an excellent review from Kerrang! magazine in
England. The demo sold out before Queensryche ever performed live. After
their first live shows, opening for Zebra, the band was signed to EMI. A
string of shows followed, opening for such acts as Quiet Riot, Dio, and
Twisted Sister. In 1984, the band went to London and recorded their first
full album, "The Warning" with producer James Guthrie. They headlined
briefly in Japan before the release, then hit the road opening for Dio and
Iron Maiden. The 1986 album "Rage for Order" was not a big commercial
success, but is the favorite of many fans. After its release, the band
toured with AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, and Bon Jovi. In 1988, the band released
their concept album, "Operation: Mindcrime," then toured with Def Leppard
and Metallica, releasing "Video: Mindcrime" in 1989 while working on their
next album. That album, "Empire," was released in late 1990, and went gold
in one week. The ensuing headline tour ran for over a year, covering the
US and Europe, with openers Suicidal Tendencies and Warrior Soul. A live
audio/video box set was released late in the tour. After the tour, the
band appeared at the "Rock and the Environment" concert and on "MTV's
Unplugged," then released a 100-minute retrospective videotape, "Building
Empires," which featured footage covering 10 years of the band.
Queensryche's sound, a blend of metal and progressive rock influenced by
Iron Maiden, Dio, Rush, Yes, Genesis, and Led Zeppelin, pioneered the new
sub-genre of "Progressive Metal," and up-and-coming bands like Dream
Theater now list Queensryche among their influences. As for Queensryche,
their original lineup is intact in their tenth year as a band, and their
sound continues to change, as progressive music does. As they say, they
are "something different every two years."
